I was in my psych class tuesday (which is a Race & Ethnic Relations course) and the prof. gets to asking about how we feel about racial jokes. I told him no, just to keep it simple. Though is Chris Rick or Uncle Bernie (r.i.p) Make a joke about ‘niggas’ I’m surely gonna laugh. If Dane Cook makes a joke about ‘niggas’ I’ll more than likely be calling him all kinds of crackers! Sad but true, and this is a reality for many black people. We have that sole right (IMO).
The class gets to talking I hear one of the white kids say
‘Black people didn’t start Hip Hop. They weren’t the only ones, there was a group of white kids and mexican kids that were there.’
Now is common knowledge that Hip Hop was started by poor Black & Latino people. Im sure there was a YT or two there as well. But damn! Can WE have something! We as a people statistically don’t have ownership to much in the world, please even in its current dismal state, let us have Hip Hop!
One of the other YT’s, who claimed to be Black in first days of the course, goes to say:
Ebonics is not an acceptable form of language.
The somewhat-calm black girl was turning into a 1970′s sistah! (Lol, at me referring to myself in the 3rd) I was too through with him, because last class we discussed the meaning of language, which is ‘an arbitrary set of rules within a community for means of communication’. Meaning, the concept of a ‘standard’ and ‘proper’ english is bullshit! Lol. It goes to show how after all this time Blacks and the things will do can never be right, or ‘acceptable.’
Another student and I were in there grunting and growning, trying not to act niggerly. All I could do was shake my head. Like were they serious? Or am I just out of the loop? Next thing they’ll be saying is Black People didn’t originate in Afrika, YT Brought us there…
Shame.
